Calving is well underway for us at the moment, marking a busy and rewarding time of year on the farm.
This season has also seen the introduction of a new bull, making it especially exciting to see his offspring for the first time and how they develop alongside the rest of the herd.
All of our cows calve inside, and once they’ve had a day or two to settle, they are turned out to grass. It’s always a moment we enjoy, watching them head out and make the most of the fresh pasture.
Within the herd, we have three distinct groups, each with their own bull. It’s interesting to observe the different characteristics coming through in the calves, as well as the mothering traits of the cows.
The pasture they are turned out onto has been rested over the winter, allowing it time to recover after last season. It’s encouraging to now see the benefits of that work, with newer grass varieties starting to come through and establish well.
