Looking to the Future: Our First AI Journey

As we prepared for the bulls to go out this year, we decided to select a few specific cows and try AI (artificial insemination) for the first time.

With our herd mainly consisting of Aberdeen Angus cattle, we decided to introduce some new genetics with Belted Galloways a breed we’ve always admired. Working closely with our vet at Black Sheep Farm Health, we carefully selected both the semen and the cows.

One of the most interesting parts has been learning more about the AI process itself and the science behind fertility, and cycling. Timing is incredibly important, so the cows’ cycles had to be carefully monitored to make sure insemination took place at the right point.

AI also gave us the opportunity to introduce new genetics without bringing another bull onto the farm, helping us carefully choose traits we would like to develop within the herd.

Hopefully we now have some Belted Galloway calves on the way, we’ll let you know in March 2027!
